Does the X31 have a built in microphone?

Mine does - type2885. I believe they all do^^.
X31 2885: Hitachi 80G 7200RPM, 2X512_2700 (1Gig), XP_SP3 (Primary)
X200 7454: 100G 7200, 1x2Gig, Vista Home Premium (upgrading to W7-32bit) (Secondary)

No. Look at where the HD activity light is located. It's right next to it. HTH.

anyways, thanks for clarifying. I wonder if the ALSA drivers support the mic.

If the ALSA drivers support the onboard sound card, they support the mic.

It is between the Mute button and the Hard drive light.
