1.8" HD future upgrade?
1.8" HD future upgrade?
I'm considering purchasing the X41 series notebook. The only thing I'm concern is the 4200 rpm hard drive speed. I'm wondering if the future 1.8" HD will be faster and if it's upgradeable.
IBM X31 (2672-268)
Good question, but I'd say no.
That said, why the X41 (you didn't say Tablet, after all)?
If you need a fast drive, and it meets your needs (graphics are the only thing that I could see a problem with), go with the X32 - it can take the 7K60 and 7K100. Seeing as you've got a T40p, weight shouldn't be that much of a concern...

I'm reselling my T40p to my brother. I want something ultraportable, as I feel the T40p is a bit heavy for me to carry to/from work. I'm not too concern about the graphic card because I'll mostly be coding with the laptop, and I have my desktop for gaming needs. I still don't like the X41 specs that much compare to other ultraportables available out there. I'm not going with the X32 because it's UGLY

It may be ugly, but it DOES have performance, at least in hard drive and CPU...apoll0 wrote:I'm reselling my T40p to my brother. Grab an X32, and something made by Dell in the same class (the D410 looks like a good candidate... 1.73GHz Dothan Sonomas in the base model, too).
The D410 just looks... FUGLY sitting on it's base. Compare that to the X32, which looks pretty good in the UltraBase X3.
For that matter, the color scheme isn't that good, either. Yep, they managed to screw up business black. And, the corners are a little too rounded for my tastes.
(Of course, the scary thing is that it otherwise looks almost EXACTLY like my X21, except for the fact that it's got a touchpad in addition to a pointing stick...)

Where do you have this information from? It seems that the new "C4K60 Slim" Series by Hitachi does use a ZIF connector (instead of the IDE connector which is used in the X40/41 Thinkpads).Skip wrote:An 80 GB model will be out this year from what I've read. However, I don't think it will be any faster.
The older C4K60 drive with IDE connector isn't even listed on the products page any more (www.hitachigst.com - products - travelstar harddrives). As Toshiba is using a ZIF connector on their 1.8" drives too I fear that the IDE version may be a phase-out model. (You can't use the ZIF version in the Thinkpad.)

My understanding is that the X31/32 are now officially discontinued. Not that there is/was anything wrong with them, but that they are not being made any more. Lenovo is selling remaining stock of them, then that is it.
Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

I can't find anything by googling...
tabook 296 is saying that there are NO X32 models withdrawn.
tawbook 291 has NO entry for the X32.
What gives?
I think the X32 will be withdrawn right around when Yonah comes out, to make room for a "L" or "P" series (this is pure speculation) that has the X3 form-factor, but is even more like a "mini-T" (read: better graphics).
X50 for Yonah LV DC and ULV SC, L50 for Yonah DC ($241 for the 1.66GHz DC chip - not bad at all).

I am replacing my T43p with a new X41 with the extra RAM brought up to 1.5GB.
I love the X41, it size and tablet factor are exactly what I am looking for. My only complaint is the slower hard drive.
I really wish some one would come up with a solution to speed things up. The X41 is is WELL liked here I can live iwth it the way it is, but if I could choose any improvement, speed up my 60gb hard drive, please.

The only IBM/Lenovo "solution" is to go a hair bigger, a hair heavier and get the X32 (while they are available).

Thanks for the suggestion but have really fallen in love with the X41 Tablet. Size and form factor is simply the best for me. The T43p is not taken out of service and all laptop duties have been put on the X41.aamsel wrote:The only IBM/Lenovo "solution" is to go a hair bigger, a hair heavier and get the X32 (while they are available).

I would like to see better harddrive performance but would not give up the size/weight and form factor for faster harddrive performance. I will be spending hours walking around with the X41 Tablet using an Excel file and once loaded up the hard drive has little to do with performance. I expect the X41 battery to last all day but putting the tablet to sleep in between use.
Don't get me wrong, the T43p is a wonderful machine, but when I purchased it, I was not even considering a tablet and it was used very little. The X41 tablet will be used on a daily basis, on the hoof. I am beginning to consider the X41 table "my large PDA". I simply can not convey how much time this device will save me and that what it is all about.

That's not very relevant to the discussion as Toshiba 1.8" drives won't fit in the X40 series. Their connector is in different position and size than the Hitachi.Skip wrote:Quoting
