definitely not as difficult as i might have thought; the worst part was breaking down and buying the parts (seriously).
from thinkpadmedic.com the hinges were $27 with shipping, but i was hoping for like $5 shipped. anywho.
got the hardware maintenance manual for x20-24 and looked it over. the only confusing issue was removal of the hinge covers (hint: pull the leading edge forward and it will unclip) and figuring out what to push on to remove the keyboard (it's a blue piece).
the hinges on my thinkpad were obliterated. not just the side i knew was gone (because it was sticking out), but both of them and they failed in a similar manner. however, i've had it three and a half years and it's seen a great deal of use.
new hinges are cherry, and with the new ac adaptors i bought i think i'm willing to upgrade the HD just so i can keep this around longer. the only thing i'd really want more is maybe bluetooth, firewire and longer battery life, but i can deal without it.
if you can plan ahead, get some compressed air to clean up the inside. also, don't vomit when you see the underside of the keyboard (it traps hair like a brush)
just replaced hinges on x22

Just got a used X23 and the screen feels a bit loose, so I was looking at changing the hinges , #2 here http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-39710 is that why you changed yours too ? Did that help a lot, does the screen feel "tight" now ?
Sorry for the late reply, as I don't post here often.
To answer your question, yes. Previous to the replacement, the screen had about 30 degrees of play before I would get friction on the hinges. When I replaced them, both were split open. Previously, I only had about 5 degrees of movement, where I suspect only one hinge had failed.
#2 is the correct part. I believe I got them from thinkpadmedic (shipping was much cheaper).
