X23 users, how do you use wireless?

Hi!

I am eyeing an IBM refurbished X23 2662-E5U. It is maxed out with 640 MB RAM and comes with a 40GB HDD. OTOH, it also comes with slower USB ports, Win2K OS, 2 months store warranty, 8MB VRAM, CF slot, and no mention of wireless at all. Is it possible to use wireless with this machine while on the move? If you are using any similar machine and also using wireless, please write how do you do that.

I'm using an X21, which is kinda similar.

Your X23 can have a wireless card put in, but I forget whether you have to lose Ethernet or modem to do that. It can also have bluetooth put in, FWIW.

Anyway, see that big slot on the left, a PC Card slot? You can find a WiFi card that will go there at any computer store. Look for PC Card, PCMCIA, and CardBus. I personally use a Linksys WPC11 Version 4, but I don't recommend it, first because it's a slow 802.11b card, and second because it's just not that great. I've heard that Netgear is good, as well.

If you want Access Connections to manage it, there's only two cards that will work. Lenovo's only selling the 31P9101, which is an A/B/G adaptor. It's $69.

So I do not need to worry about whether this model comes with the built-in wireless antenna? Just slip in a 31P9101 card costing $69 in that slot and I am ready to go?

Exactly - it's got it's own antenna.

Of course, if you don't care about Access Connections, just get a $20-30 WiFi card from your local computer store. It won't work with Access Connections, but the network card manufacturers have their own software that will work, and if their software isn't good enough, Boingo Wireless will work.

i use this card on an x22:

it's a pcmcia 802.11 card. i like this card because of 3com's xjack antenna which tucks away when not in use. it's been awhile but i seem to recall that installing the ibm wireless card in an x22 would disable functionality of the modem. either that or the x22 doesnt support the internal card.
