26725KU vs. 2672RHU ???

#1 Post by aamsel » Wed Jun 30, 2004 8:58 pm

There is almost $500 difference in the price of these two units.
The cheaper one (5KU) has a faster 1.7 processor, 256MB, and wireless B. The more expensive one has a 1.6, 512 and wireless a/b/g and bluetooth.
Question: can the wireless a/b/g and bluetooth be added to the 5KU unit?? I understand that the bluetooth alone is about $100 in parts, how much is the wireless a/b/g module???

Is this worth doing, or is the RHU worth the extra $500???

If not, what is the best deal (value) on an X31/X40???

The wireless card can be upgraded. It's about $100 for the IBM 11a/b/g mini PCI card. Bluetooth can be added, but it's a little more involved. Look through some of the older posts on this forum regarding the installation of Bluetooth. Depending on your model, you might have to install a Bluetooth antenna too.

Unless you absolutely must have 802.11a, you'll probably want to take a look at the 2885-4WU which is about $2500 but includes the X3 Ultrabase and a CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive.

Well, that looks good, but, my understanding was that the Ultrabase on the X31 makes the X31 too thick (compared to the X40).
That being the case, what is the best thing to do???
Should I just go with the X40 then???

How thick is the X31 with the Ultrabase? How much does the X31 weigh with the base and ultrabay cdrw? I would consider an external CDRW if it were not for the fact that I frequently watch DVD movies on my bed, thus having something else dangling around is inconvenient. An extra $550 just for the convenience.

Do all X31s come with mini-pci 802.11b? I thought it didn't and I added the Cisco Aironet device for an extra $200. I have a PCMCIA Orinoco gold but would like something integrated and not sticking out.

Doesn't look so great with the media bay attached.

Yup, just got the X31 today. With the base it is pretty chunky. But without it, it looks very sleek and sexy.
