X24 antenna cover - IBM don't know what part number it is

#1 Post by AndyL » Mon Sep 19, 2005 6:14 am

I'm trying to upgrade my non-wifi X24 to internal wireless. So I bought an intel 2200BG mini-PCI card (which works fine in the Thinkpad), the IBM antennas (FRU part# 26P9824) and the LCD rear cover (26P9819). I was hoping one of those would include the little ridged antenna covers that fit in the sides of the lid, but unfortunately not. Phoned IBM hardware support and they couldn't tell me what the part# is for the antenna covers - they just have the same parts information that you can download from the web site

Has anyone here successfully done a wireless upgrade on an X22/X23/X24, and if so do you know how to get hold of the antenna covers?

If not, does anyone have any tips for getting in contact with proper technical people at IBM?

it would most likely be part of a small parts "kit"..
look through the HMM and read the fine manual.. :)
i.e. RTFM

 Figures...
I have some contacts in IBM professional services so I'll see if any of them knows anyone in the hardware division - that's a long shot though with a company the size of IBM.

The HMM lists "LCD misc parts" 26P9826 as well as a couple of other misc parts sets, but does not list the contents of any of them. To add to the confusion, the FRU list on the IBM web site shows that part number as the LCD brackets (not misc parts). There is no picture or description of the part I'm after in the HMM at all unfortunately. I'm reluctant to order parts speculatively as IBM whack a hefty shipping charge on small orders.

I've sent off a few emails to 3rd party service parts suppliers to see if any of them have any better information but I'm not optimistic. I'll make sure to post again if I can find out anything positive.

BTW thanks for replying Bill.

Update: I managed to get in contact with a helpful lady called Chloe in IBM parts sales, who went to some lengths to try to find me an answer to the X24 antenna covers mystery... unfortunately she couldn't find the answer so it's still a mystery. It seems to be impossible to buy the wifi antenna covers.

It's supposed to be in 26P9826. The vendor has confirmed that it is *supposed* to be in there. It's a mistake, and it'll get fixed.

Unfortunately it means that the covers aren't in any kit, and if you order any more 26P9826 you can bet that it won't contain the covers either. It'll get sorted out. It's a stupid problem to have happen.

The small ridged antenna that sticks out the side of the LCD seems to be for the WirelessWAN (e.g. Cingular, Vodafone etc GSM/GPRS) :P
T21 1GHz 160GB 512MB DVDRW
770 233Mhz 288MB 10GB DVD
Presario 1700 1.06GHz 512Mb 160GB CDRW-DVD
:)

The discussion is about different covers than the WWAN, something that wasn't offered on the X2X and X3X series machines.
