Played with an X40 today, wow!

#1 Post by rocketman » Sun Sep 25, 2005 3:06 pm

I haven't really seen an X series Thinkpad up close but being in the market for a smalll notebook thats good for travel I went to a store in NYC this morning called RCS Computers on Madison Ave and 56th St. They actually open at 9 AM on Sunday mornings and have the X40 on display. Well it looks and feels great, perfect size and the keyboard feels fantastic. I was even impressed with the display brightness which I was afraid would be too dim but it isn't. It was sitting between two Sony notebooks with TrueBrite displays and they really showed a lot of glare where the X40 display was perfectly readable. The X40 on display had the 1.2GHz PM processor so I'm trying to decide between the X40 and X41. Are there any physical differences between the X40 and X41 case?

AFAIK, the X40 and X41 are both externally the same. The difference is the chipset on the 41's mobo.
Current: 365XD (120 MHz, 72 MiB, 6.4 GB, 4x CD-ROM, 10.4" TFT)
Past: T61p 15.0" QXGA, T60p 15.0" QXGA, X61 Tablet SXGA+, R51e 14.1" XGA, X21

...and the fingerprint reader (found on some X41 models). Doesn't affect the form ratio, though.

I have both an X40 and X41...the X40 has a 1.1 proc and the X41 has a 1.5 proc. If there are any physical differences I surely can't tell what they would be...the units look identical. Performance wise...the X41 is noticeably peppier...both take about the same time to boot but launching apps and other things seem just generally faster on the X41...mind you neither machine is "fast" and I probably could live with the speed of the X40 without complaint had I not had a 41 to compare it with...after all I didn't buy either one for speed :) Battery life is a little better on the X40 tho whether this is important to you depends on how you are using it...I rarely am away from power for more then 4 hours or so and either machine will do that. The other consideration is the graphics chip...I can play some games on the 41 that were somewhat unplayable on the 40...I really only consider this a bonus as the machine definately isn't meant for gaming.

The 41 has the fingerprint reader btw and so far I really like it...I is very accurate and hasn't given me any problems yet. Not sure how much more secure it actually is because of the reader but it does "feel" more secure :)

Bottom line I would say is that if max battery life is critical go with the X40...if it isn't go with the X41 as they are pretty much the same cost I think. I don't think you will be dissapointed with either machine if portability is your main consideration.

The 40 is available with both older Banias and newer Dothan processors. Clock speeds from 1.1 to 1.5GHz.

The 41 is available with Dothans from 1.1 to 1.5GHz.

So, that's all a moot point about the 41 having a 1.5 versus the 40 having a 1.1.

Forgot about the fingerprint reader option...

Anyway, if I were in the market for an X4... The X40 has better battery life, as the 855 chipset in it uses less power. However, the X41 is faster, because the 915 chipset uses DDR2 RAM instead of DDR, and has a much better integrated graphics core.
