Help a new X41T owner remove the bloat!

#1 Post by defiant » Sun Oct 09, 2005 10:37 am

Hey everyone!

Well, I just got a X41T. This is my first Thinkpad and its great. However, I want to remove as much of the bloat as I can to improve performance.

What programs can I remove from Startup and uninstall entirely? Also, when I load/shutdown XP, a virtual keyboard app obscures the screen, anyone know the name of that app so I can disable that?

Any other hints/tips would be apprciated too. Thanks

Hi, congratulations for your new TP.

First, you can read a lot about enhancing your X41T performance here in this forum. Look deeper into the archive and you can find lots of info.

Second - you may enter Start>Run>msconfig and just uncheck any non windows or IBM program, but be careful. It's important to keep windows threads and some of IBM programs (like the HD protection or WIFI etc.)

Third - I recommend that you go to system preferences (right click on My computer and "properties"), then go to "advanced", and choose "settings" under "performance". In the new window choose "adjust for best performance". It will set your display to look more like win2k and less like winXP, but your computer will run faster.

Fourth - I uninstalled norton. It is too heavy to my little X41T to run this memory monster.

Fifth - This keyboard process is "KeyboardSurrogate.exe".

Sixth - Have fun with your tablet. It is great.

Thanks for your advice. I've got the same model as you - I'll be adding an additional GB of ram soon.

1. Save the files on drive C:

2. Remove the protected area on your drive. It is protected in your bios (pre desktop area)

3. Create your own Win XP CD. You will find everything for such a CD on your hard drive:

Do not forget the "CMPNENTS"! These files are needed for the Win XP Tablet Edition!

4. Format C:

5. Install your WinXP Tablet Edition

6. Install the drivers with the IBM Software Installer. You can also save the drivers on a seperate (new) drive in order to keep drive C: free of this additional load.

Enjoy a fast and smoothly running new system!
:) :) :)
