Minimum speed for watching video?

#1 Post by Txiasaeia » Sun Jul 04, 2004 3:43 pm

I've usually got my X31 set at 200MHz when I'm on battery power, but I'm thinking about putting a couple of movies on my HD for a trip. What's the minimum CPU speed I'll need for non-choppy video playback? Doesn't matter to me whether they're compressed or uncompressed - if it's only one or two movies that's only 10GB, and it's not permanent. Thanks!

As far as I know, the Pentium M's lowest operating speed is 600 MHz, although Windows tends to report this incorrectly from time to time.

Software DVD playback became feasible with a 300 MHz Pentium II processor, so even if your Pentium M was stuck at 200 MHz it could probably handle at least DVD playback with no problems.

Compression requires some overhead to decode the data, but the amount of overhead depends on the codec.

On super power saver the speed goes down to 221 MHz - this is reported by Windows, though.

400Mhz is the lowest I'd go - you can get playback below that but it's choppy and multi-tasking is impossible.
