It has an analog external display port so you can attach any display devices to it (monitor, projector), and use them (the X40's TFT and the external device) simultaneously.

Thanks. Just so I'm clear: does this mean that I can have a Word document open on one screen and an Excel document open on the other screen and move my mouse back and forth between them?

It's called Extended Desktop. And yes, ThinkPad X40's Intel Extreme Graphics 2 supports it.
