That's interesting, I had actually picked up a cheap X23 that I restored as a backup for my X31 and it didn't work out really. For one thing the "harder" keyboard is tough on my fingers (I agree the X31 keyboard is pretty shiny though after 12 months of use) and the fan seems to be blowing at all times, even when idling, unlike the X31, although it is less noisy than the X31 fan when it runs. Also USB1 is a problem for me and the fact that I can't switch the HDs as I can presumably do between the X31 and X32. I did reuse an old WiFi miniPCI card I had hanging around. I'll probably pass it on to my wife to replace the old noisy/bulky Sony she currently uses.
I just read through this thread and tried to follow what you did. Went from a T42 to an X32 and THEN bought an X22 just for fun? And you find the X22 to be just about as good for your purposes as the X32?asiafish wrote:The problem for me is that I bought an X22 for only $300, and after some cheap upgrades; 512MB Ram (total 640), 5400 RPM drive and 3Com X-jack wifi card, my X32 is almost equalled for roughly 1/4 the price.
The X32 is slower, but fast enough to do all of my real work at full speed (though TV shows in iTunes are jittery). It only lasts 4 hours on the battery and has no extended battery option, but 4 hours is pretty good and I can always carry a second main cell. Finally, while it is a smidge bulkier and heavier, it has a better keyboard and seems a bit sturdier (made in Korea instead of China might be the reason). If nothing else, the keyboard keys themselves are a much nicer plastic as the X32 (and T42p) keys get slick fairly quickly while the texturing on the X22 keys remains much longer (harder plastic?).
So, while I love my X32, I've found that my X22 makes a decent substitute and if I can get enough in a sale, I'll take it.
And why is the X32 better than the X40 on the one hand, and better than the newer model X42 etc on the other?
I both the X22 (we previously exchanged msgs about this) and like it, but am now thinking it might be moved up to main machine if I go to the X32, more ram, and the 7200 RPM 60 or 80G drive (I have the 60G in my T30, but am thinking of selling that).
Any more info you could share on this subject would be helpful.
Cheers--
