First of all this is my first post here and I'm just ecstatic to find a IBM only forum with so much traffic. Now to my question. I own a x31 which I just upgraded to a single 512 stick of what I though was pc2700 from PNY. The memory reads as pc3200 in cpu-z heres a link to a screenshot

I paid 99.00 with a $30 rebate at Comp USA for any of you trying to upgrade on the cheap.
I've read x31's only support memory speeds of 266 and 333. As you can see in the screen shot though the memory is clocked at 133 which is pc 2100 and the ratio is 3:4 but with pc2700 memory it should be 166 mhz at a 1:1 ratio.
So what I really want to know is do x31 fully support ddr2700 or if it just runs the ddr2700 at 2100 speeds. Thanks in advance for the help.

From what I understand, the memory controller on the motherboard of the X31 limits the speed of the ram to PC2100 (DDR266) speeds. So you will not be able to get the PC2700 (DDR333) memory to work at those speeds. Good news is that there was a post here (I believe under the T series set of topics) detailing the performance difference between PC2100 and PC2700 on 2 identically configured machines (I believe a T41 versus a T40) and the difference was between 2-4% for the increase in memory speed. Not the kind of difference like it was going from 133mhz sdram -> PC2100 where the speed increase was significant.

I have a ThinkPad X Series : 26722BU and per the IBM website, I should upgrade to P/N 31P9832 512MB PC2700 CL2.5 DDR SDRAM SODIMM (Which I did). I am wondering upon what you base your opinion that X31's cannot make full use of PC2700 RAM?

I think I might have spoken too broadly - apparently *some* models of the X31 were based on the 855GM chipset which can support up to PC2100 max. Other models are based on the 855PM chipset which can support 266 or 333. Sorry for the potentially misleading answer.

I do have the i855PM Rev. 3, with my X31, nonetheless the frequency in the Memory is 133 Mhz ?

According to the tabook, the memory controller on *all* X31's limits the RAM speed to 266MHz (every model is PM). Now, am I mistaken, but doesn't PC2100 memory only run at 266MHz? If so, what was the point of including PC2700 RAM on later X31's if they could only run at PC2100 speeds? I'm very confused.

PC2700 Memory is cheaper than PC2100 memory !

My x31 has a 855PM chipset. I tried both sticks of ram seperately in my Gateway 200x which is a 855GM chipset and i had the excat same results. I'm starting to think that maybe both chipsets are limited to running pc2700 at pc2100 speeds. Then why would Intel on their own website claim that both chipsets run dddr333?

Reviving this thread, would it be ok to put PC3200 in an X31, waste of speed I guess but it seems to be the cheapest these days...
