Wi-Fi misbehavior

#1 Post by iberger » Sat Nov 05, 2005 7:33 pm

As of this morning, I cannot make a wi-fi connection with my LAN. I have a D-Link router, and its lights seem to be blinking normally, and my desktop machine can connect to the Internet through it.

But my X40, which communicates wirelessly, cannot. There is a red X on the icon for the 11b/g wireless adapter. The status window says Radio ON, not associated. Signal quality is poor, though I am now just a couple of feet from the router --so it may well be a router problem; how do I tell?

However, clicking Find WLAN shows my network, with signal strength of 100%, operating on Channel 6. Earlier today it also showed some neighbors using that channel, but with lower signal strength.

The ThinkVantage Access Connectios box fails at the Connecting to wireles access port line.

The Wireless Network Connection icon also has a red X and the tooltip says "not connected" When i right click it and clicked repair, I got a message that Windows could not repair it because disabling the wireless network adapter cannot be completed.

I also have Verizon's VZAccess Manager, left over from a trial of their EV-DO wireles system. That shows the presence of my network, with maximum signal strength. But the bottom fo the screen says Connecting.....for a long time, then switches to Not Connected.

Any ideas?

Is there still a wireless adapter in device manager?

Do you get the centrino logo when booting?

I did not and it was because of the network pci card "jumped" out of it's socket.

X40 Wi-Fi Problem

#3 Post by iberger » Mon Nov 07, 2005 1:04 am

I will try your suggestion, but I am coming to the conclusion that the X40 hardware is not the problem. At the moment, it comes up and notes the presence of my Wi-Fi network and of a coupel of others in the neighborhood....oops! They're gone except for mine, which shows 5 bars (as it should, being two feet from the router.

I clicked Connect for my network, and got "please wait while Windows connects to thsi network" and a constantly running string of little green dots in that window, and while that went on the other LANs disappeared. Eventually that stops running and I am back to the Wireless Network Connection window.

We are back to red Xes on the 11b/g Wireless and Wireless Network Connection icons in the tray . . . but I still get contrary indications of signal strength: Wireless Network Connection shows me 5 green bars of signal and adds that the network requires a network key (which I have); Wirless Connection Status syas Signal Strengh 0%, and Radio ON, not associated.

Under Wireless Connection Status, if I click on Find WLAN, though, it finds it and gives me a MAC address and says signal strength is 100%

Device Manager shows the 11b/f wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter...or rather it did until I rebooted to see if I got the Centrino icon (which I've never noticed during boots before)., if it was there I blinked and missed it, but now Decice Manager show a red x on the 11b/g adapter. Clicking Enable brought it back, but still with red x's on the associated tray icons

Does it work when you're further away from the router? There's something about the radio waves requiring a certain distance.

Also, try removing and adding the SSID manually. For some reason, that has worked for me previously.

i have had the same problem. it was my dlink router (di-704). it eventually died. i'm now using trendnet router 511brp which is working better than dlink (and i'm getting 108mbps if that really matters in anyway in terms of performance...)

Wi-Fi Misbehavior

Turns out the problem was not in the X40 at all, but in the router: Once I powered it down and back up again, I could get on fine.

I guess that wireless routers, like cable modems, need to be powered down and then back up periodically. Which, doubtless, is why the manufacturers don't give them on-off switches.

Thanks for all the sugestions, though.
