x24 802.1b upgradable to 802.1 a/b/g?

#1 Post by jealouse » Wed Jul 07, 2004 1:57 am

hello

i have x24 with built-in 802.1b (mini pci)

is it possible to upgrade to 802.1 a/b/g by simply swapping mini pci card?

i'm mainly concerned if the built-in antenna is compatible to 801.2a and 802.1g as well.

(or perhaps i should upgrade antenna as well?)

thanx in advance!

does anybody know the answer to the question? i'm buying 802.1 b/g router soon and would really like to know the answer. i'm reluctant to call IBM cuz usually those people don't know what they are talking about (think bestbuy salesman)

IBM does usually know what they're talking about. And I really don't think it's worth the extra expense to get .11a compatability. A decent number of places run g, but almost no one uses a.

a/b/g in X24

#5 Post by WilsonF » Tue Jul 27, 2004 10:00 am

I think that it may not be possible if yours is one of the x2x models with a combo WiFi and modem miniPCI.

However, I have an x23 and an X24 at home in which I use D-Link AG650 WiFi pc cards and have disabled the 802.11b mini-pci card. These get reception and throughput on both the A and G bands that is as good as that of my T42p with the a/b/g card.

it should work but you would be breaking a bunch of FCC laws doing it.

The FCC mandates that no 802.11a device have a user changeable antenna. So by adding the a/b/g card you are in effect changeing the antena to support the a option.

Better solution would be to get one of the new Intel b/g cards and go with that. It should work no problem in your x24

Excuse me for digging up this old thread but i'm in the exactly same boat as the original poster.

I have an x24 and want to upgrade to a minipci 802.11a/b/g card I already have the router (dual band a/b/g) so and want to standardize on 802.11a.

Did any of you manage to figure out if the ibm 802.11a/b/g mPCI card works? is the antenna port compatible?

Anyone know if there are any kind of bios locks on teh x24 like there is on the x30+ that will prevent me from using some other 3rd party mPCI card?

Thanks,

I have a cordless phone that operates on the 2.4 ghz range and that kills my wireles connection everytime.. =(

And since 802.11a works at the 5ghz range, it should be smooth sailing.

Your range will suck goats.

My suggestion would be to get a 5ghz phone and stick with 802.11g/b.

As for the cards - the X24 is also locked to accept only certain cards. Go get an IBM card from ebay.

Hmm.. i didn't know that about 802.11a...

well regardless of the frequencies and ranges... Will the IBM 802.11a/b/g card fit and work with the x24's antenna/bios/etc?

thanks,

Bearing in mind the original T40 with 802.11b requires a BIOS upgrade to work with the a/b/g card, I think it's a fair assumption that something similar will be required for the X2x series.

X24 wifi upgrades

#13 Post by TomStearns » Wed Mar 01, 2006 11:02 pm

My X24 gave all manner of connection problems with the Actiontac built-in so I bought a "B" PCMCIA card thinking my Linksys router was G and B. Worked no better than the built-in ie connected for anywhere from 10 seconds to 10 minutes but highly unreliable.

I then bought a G card and that seems to solve the problem.

No fussing with BIOS, no fooling with anything----auto selected security codes in about 2 minutes. Good signal 35 feet away from router.

mr_yellow, the Antennas are all standard for 2.4GHz / 5GHz, I really want to know about the impressive a/b/g Router that you have :)
