'Invalid Machine Type' problems

#1 Post by edwardoneale » Thu Nov 10, 2005 3:44 pm

Hi there, i've just got my first thinkpad from eBay, and i'm having problems with the Software Installer from the lenovo website. I've looked at a few other posts regarding this, but haven't been able to use them to sort my problem out.....

From what i understand, 'invalid machine type' message when using Software Installer are to do with your BIOS info not matching the expected value.

I've got a X20, 2662 36G. The label on the back says:

Type 2662-36G S/N 55-4042L 00/10

The BIOS info says: System-unit serial number - 55-4042L and System board serial number - FXC020BM1LF.

Thinkpad Configuration says: Machine Type-Model - 55-4042 and System unit serial number - L. The system biard serial number is the same as in the BIOS.

When i click on 'detect my system' on the lenovo website it says: 'No products match '55-4-042'.

I guess my question is what are the values that are not matching, and
what can i do about it?

Sorry for such a long post and many thanks for any replys!

I guess no one can help with the 'invalid machine type' problem then, and i can't use the automatic driver download tool. Does anyone know of a driver cd (or similar) containing all the standard drivers for an X20, or do i have to download and install them all sperately?

The system board has apparently been replaced. You need to find a nearby IBM service centre and have them reset the model number and serial number. Perhaps a technical friend in a company has or can get the IBM Hardware service diskette - that will allow you to reset the machine.
