x20 processor speed
hi all. Just bought a second hand x20 ( to add to my c240 and 600E) This sounds like a crazy question - but not sure what cpu speed i've got??!! Was sold to me as a 600mhz. The bios reports it as a p3 600mhz. The serial no on the bottom sticker shows 2662-34G. The ibm support site says that should be a 600mhz. I ran their "detect my system utility" which reported it as a 2662-36G. (not quite the same as the sticker on the machine!?) BUT....... windows xp reports a 500mhz (in control panel/system/hardware summary). I thought i'd confirm for certain by running cpu-z utility - this reports a p3 running at 497 mhz !!! I'm now totally confused!!! Is it a 600 or a 500??
PS - desite all this - am really pleased so far - have got most of my software loaded now and am planning to get a 256 stick of ram to increase the ram.

They sold both, 500 and 600. The 500 is a Celeron while the 600 is a Pentium 3. Hope that helps. Also, on battery the 600 SpeedSteps down to 500! To save the battery. Ron

thanks for the reply ron. I just ran cpu-z again and looked more closely at the info. Says a P3E Coppermine. Core speed is 497.8 - muliplier 5.0 - bus speed and fsb is 99.8 - under specification it says Pentium III E 500mhz. But the bios first page is showing P3 600 mhz speedstream ( or was it speedstep!?). Confusing eh??? PS I am running all these checks with ac adaptor plugged in!!

ok. This just seems to get even more curious. Sisoft sandra benchmarking program reports a "pentium 3 coppermine E 500" as the name of the processor but gives "processor speed 597mhz" !! Maybe i'll just keep running as many benchmarking utilities as possible and take the majority /average result!! LOL.
Windows XP? Hmm...
Try installing (IIRC) SpeedStep Switcher. I think that's the name of the app, anyway.
Make sure it's set for Maximum Performance, so you can get full speed.
Also note that the 600MHz and 700MHz P3s in the X2x chassis get *HOT* when running at full speed, from what I've seen and heard. The only thing to do is underclock it to 500, and use full speed only in short bursts.
