here is a link to a program (freeware) to use and check for dead pixels. please make sure your screen is clean before using! (don't want to confuse dirt with a dead pixel....)

Well, I'm posting anyway, even though I've got an old X21.
Original owner purchased it 2001-06-27. I purchased it in early 2005-06.
In September, it started developing a green stuck subpixel, that could easily be massaged away, due to my method of getting the network working - stretching the cable over the LCD.
It's now a seven white pixel and one green subpixel-wide monstrosity. And it's growing.
I live with it, copy-and-pasting stuff that's under the line so that I can see stuff.
Edit: Eh, didn't mention that it was a green stuck subpixel LINE, not a single subpixel.

X41T with THREE defective pixels. Other laptops with various problems too.
When I purchased a new laptop and it had a bad pixel (or seven) I would usually return it should such return not cause an inconvenience to me. Then I realized that other laptops I had (which were perfect on delivery) developed bad pixels and I lived with them as a few pixel problems never interfere with my work. That, and further research, showed me that laptops with pixel problems on delivery are no more likely to develop further problems than laptops which never had a problem. So now I could really care less once I get past the initial disappointment.
Once I do my research on what laptop fits my needs best, is built best, is supported best, and if the manufacturer or market will continue to supply me with parts, etc., I buy the laptop to USE it. It's not a collector's item. I'm not buying it with the intention of selling it again at any time. I can't be worried that there are people (like MANY members here) who feel a laptop with a single bad pixel has some sort of cancer, or the plague, or other "disease" that will spread and eventually destroy humanity as we know it! Folks, it's a freakin' pixel (out of a MILLION or more). It has gotten to the point around here where we are scaring new members and readers into thinking they have a horrible laptop because it may have a bad pixel! Yikes! I mean how many posts do I have to read about this or about how someone didn't even know they had a bad pixel until they read a post that told of some software they could run to test for them... then the poor reader has to go to a dang psychiatrist because they are so upset about finding a bad piixel, and now they spend their entire time on the laptop locating and worried about the pixel instead of USING the computer!
There are a lot of examples out there in the world we live in where purchases are not perfect. If I use a magnifying glass (equal to using software to find pixel problems you've not detected with the naked eye) and look at the finish of the most expensive car I can find I WILL find a scratch. Even if seen with the naked eye that scratch has no bearing to the function or use of that car but in my mind if I let that scratch bother me it WILL. Something won't be right with the operation of that car. And have ANY of us ever seen a perfectly built house? There ISN'T one, but we pay thousands of times more for a house than for a laptop. If my house has a small defect and someone complements me on my house I wouldn't tell the person about the tiny defect, but I know people who will make comments like "yeah I have a great laptop, but it has a bad pixel". WHY?
I wish we could put things like this in perspective, but we live in a world where people want to buy things meant to be USED and collect them. My neighbor's daughter wanted to show me all her Barbie dolls one day. She had 50 dolls in pristine boxes but only ONE she could play with. Her mommy said she wasn't even allowed to touch the others. Another friend's child has dozens of Nascar replica cars in a case that only his father has the key to because he isn't allowed to touch them. He has ONE he's allowed to play with and he's forced to stare at the rest through the glass. Heck, we have people here who spend more on a sleve and a case and screen protectors and ??? than their laptops are worth! All that so it don't get a scratch. I am careful too (as any buyer of any of my iused laptops will tell you), but there is a point at which it goes too far. Our Thinkpads are not collectables and none of them are likely perfect when they arrive. If the were we'd have little need for a warranty. They are TOOLS, and just like when any other tool I own gets a scratch or develops a defect that has no bearing on the USE of that tool, I could care less.
If there are enough pixels bad to cause interference with my USE of the laptop I will care. Otherwise I don't have the time to spend worrying about pixels anymore. I've got enough other stuff in life to focus on, as I'm sure most of you do too.
There is nothing wrong with any laptop that has pixel problems if they (the bad pixels) don't interfere with the owner's use of the laptop. There, I said it. Use your Thinpads and enjoy them for the tools they are!
Just my opinion...
