X31 power failure/charging problem

#1 Post by stever » Mon Dec 12, 2005 10:45 am

I've had my X31 for well over a year now and it's been great... until recently. Just in the last week I've had a couple of spooky things happen more than once:

- Random total power off while in standby. Three times now I have shut the lid and put the system in standby, and when I open the lid up later it is completely off. This seems like a total power failure, not an inadvertent software shutdown, as (1) the battery has been fully charged in all these cases, (2) I have the power options set to never hibernate, and (3) it's off, not hibernated. This last time was particularly scary as it didn't want to turn on; it was unresponsive to the power button until I removed and reseated the battery and put it in the docking station (not sure which of those did the trick).

- Even though the unit is plugged in, it occasionally stops charging the battery. Once I had it plugged in all night (as I usually do) and in the morning the battery charge was still at 70%. Another time it got stuck at 42%. I have to turn the machine off and back on again to get it to charge the battery all the way to 100%.

I bought a new battery straight from Lenovo in September; I don't see how that's related since it has worked great for three months before these problems arose, but I figured I'd mention it anyway. I can't think of anything else that could have brought this on. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

Thanks,

Steve

Sounds like a bum battery. Can you try it with a different battery unit and see if the same thing would repeat itself?

The exact same thing happened to our X31. I called IBM and they told me it was going into standby and then hibernating. The guy never believed me when I told him that it couldn't be hibernating, since I have it set to never hibernate and it was booting from scratch. He said I'd have to mail in my computer to have it fixed, but I think he was just giving me the brush-off. I need my computer, so I just live with it. Maybe I'll call again and get a more reasonable person.
