Will this RAM work with my X40?

#1 Post by DavidNZ » Wed Dec 14, 2005 1:19 pm

I note it's PC2700, but I read somewhere that it shouldn't matter (X40 specifies PC2100 I believe). Also, doesn't say whether it is CL2.5 or CL3. Does that really matter?

Probably. You should try and get a PC2700, with CL = 2.5.

That link shows that CL is the biggest impact on memory performance. Though it also shows that it don't make that big a difference.

So, get a PC2700 w/CL=2.5.

Cheers akao. Interesting link. Problem is the memory I find for sale doesn't' always specify the CL rating, and often the staff don't know. And, finding info on the Net is difficult.

Well, it seems like you might not be in the US. Here, I use newegg.com which has great prices and the product descriptions are good. Two options: Buy a namebrand ram that you can look up on the manufacturer's website to determine the speed. Go to a physical retail store and look on the chip. They always say the CL on a sticker on the chip.

Yup, am in NZ. Few other places that have RAM that I need that I've found (but PC2700 instead of PC2100, which is fine). The problem with the RAM I've linked to above in the original post is that the CL value is not listed on the chip itself, hence the question.

Cheers mate!

Just to close out this thread, although it would likely be useful only for those in AUS/NZ, the RAM in the original post above does indeed work.
