How to minimize boot time on the X41?

#1 Post by plucky duck » Thu Dec 15, 2005 8:46 pm

I just got my new X41 and would like a few optimisation pointers on the OS to minize boot time. When not in use, which is faster to get it back up and running again, hibernation or standby?

Thanks!

FWIW, I think optimizing for fastest performance is most satsifying over the long haul. So if the machine will be "off" for a short while (a couple of hours rather than a couple of days), then it will come back fastest from standby. Then who cares whether it boots in 3 min. or 4 min. so long as everything you need is starting properly. ... JD Hurst

Getting back from hibernation it takes 25-30 seconds on my machine with 1.5 GB memory. This is fast enough for me so that I rarely use the standby modus. I have assigned hibernation to the power off button.

I've wondered about this myself, so I'm glad I found this thread.

However, shouldn't you reboot your machine to release or reclaim the lost memory which invariably "leaks" from Windows through everyday use of programs? Granted, I'm not a super computing expert like many here (don't even work in the industry at all :) ), but that had always been my understanding.

Rebooting your computer does "clean" out your memory. But programs that have memory leaks such as firefox, only keep data in RAM when still executed, when shut down, all the "leaked" memory get flushed. However windows have already cached some of the files used to execute firefox, so that the next time you start firefox, it will start faster.

It is most evident when your system have plenty of memory ( 1Gb+ ).

That is why hibernation is recommended. However windows isn't as efficient in using all the RAM as MacOSX or Linux and should benefit from a reboot at regular intervals.
