If they are both on the network, you could use UltraVNC. Run the server on your desktop and connect to it with client on the laptop, then it will show you the "desktop" desktop on the laptop :)

I think, he is rather looking for http://www.maxivista.com

"MaxiVista turns any spare PC into an extra monitor for your primary PC. No extra hardware required. You can seamlessly extend program windows across multiple screens like it would be a single big monitor. Increase your productivity now by using multiple monitors"

If that other computer has XP Pro installed the best free option is to use Remote Desktop which is way faster / more responsive than any VNC variant. UltraVNC and others are viable solutions for other operating systems but for XP Pro it makes no sense not to use built in RD server.

On the other hand it may not be statisfactory solution either since neither RDC nor VNC can use DirectX (afaik).

Maxivista is what i was looking for. Just downloaded and purchased the Pro version tonight. It even allows operating the x31 from the desktop's mouse and keyboard. pretty cool!

I was aware of VNC and RD before but it does something completly different. I use it for controlling my server in the basement remotely.

Thanks for all your help.
