memory upgrade for X31

#1 Post by otprof » Tue Dec 20, 2005 10:48 pm

I just got my new X31 from IBM certified used, and it is totally sweet. Thanks to all of you folks for helping me make my decision.

Please tell me if this is correct, as I don't want to order the wrong thing:

With my base memory of 256, I have one free slot that will accept 2700 or 2100 memory, but will only run at 2100 speeds. A 1GB stick will work in the free slot to give me 1.2 total.

Actually, do you think adding a 512 for 768MB total would be more than sufficient for daily needs? I'm not editing video or anything. The 512 at crucial is 60-70 bucks or so, and the 1GB is 140 or so (quoting from memory)

Thanks!

the x31 runs with a 133 bus, so it doesn't matter if you use DDR266 or DDR333(2100 or 2700).
as about how much, the more you have, the better it is. I have 1.5Gb, I also set a RAM drive where I put the apps I use the most, this way the system is overall fatster and saves power as well, RAM access costs less than HDD access in terms of both performance and power consumption.
I could use 2GB just as well...

If you don't use a ram drive, play FPS games, or use speech recognition, then another 512 should be more than enough. I'd save my money.

But I'm interested in a RAM drive. What RAM drive do you use?

A RAM drive is really cool. Eclipse loads faster on this notebook(X31 1.5Ghz slow-axx RAM) than on my desktop(A64 2.6GHz, ultra-fast RAM, maxtor 10)
I use RamDisk from SuperSpeed
