where can I find an airline charging cable for my X30?

#1 Post by CyberDude » Fri Dec 23, 2005 7:48 am

I am going to start doing frequest trans atlantic flights and want to get a charging cable for my X30 that I can plug into the under seat sockets.

Does anyone know where I can get one of these?
Are they standard across all cariiers?

I'll be flying American Airlines mostly I think.

I believe that IBM/Lenovo sells a power adapter suited for just this type of thing.

Part number: 73P4485 ThinkPad 72W Slim AC/DC Combo Adapter
http://www-131.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/store ... lCurrId=73

Part number: 22P9010 ThinkPad 72W AC/DC Combo Adapter
Link on the IBM website does not work.

Both units sell for $99 retail.

I have never taken American Airlines, bun on Lufthansa you don't need a special adapter. You can just use normal AC adapters with a French, US or Japanese plug. But, this is for first and business class. I don't think there is a power supply in economy class. By the way, FlyNet (by Boing) costs approx. 30 usd for the complete duration of a flight.

I wish Asiana had that on trans-Pacific flights. I don't even need an outlet with my X32 and the extended plate battery. I doubt I could stare at the screen for more than 10 hours.

Thanks for the replies. Wow $99

The AA power sockets looked just like the cigar lighter sockets in a car. I don't know if they are configured the same though.

I'll see if I can find more out by calling AA.

I'm a six-year Advantage Gold member of American's FF program - ALL IN Coach. On most aircraft they fly there are power outlets in coach, but not in every row. I use a Lind DC adapter, in the airplanes and in rental cars with the cigarette outlet as the source; it is the same plug on Ameriocan Airlines. The outlet at the seat is 12 volt DC, the same as in automobiles. My Lind DC power adapter costs less than US$30.00, and I've seen them on eBay for about that much.
Good luck.

There are plenty of car/auto DC adapters available on eBay for $20-$30 shipped. I thought about buying one at one time but instead opted to use an in inverter I already had and plug my regular adapter into it. This has worked for me for 10 plus years in my car and motorhome. In the small confines of an airplane it might be less intrusive using one of the aforementioned DC car adapters. Here are links to a couple just for reference: LINK 1

Great RRHODY. I'll check out the DC adapters. I have made a not of which rows have the power sockets on the 777s. So now I just need to get the adapter.

Thanks for the links LtPfan.

I just found these on ebay>
DC power adapter but only 60W. I think I need 72W for X30 right?

Also found this inverter. Looks small and convenient and cheap. Will this do?

Yeah I know they are pricey and all but.....

I love my Targus adapter. Very sleek and trim. Most trips that is all I pack. Does both auto and airplane adapting.

Most of these inverter setups and other brands end up both bulky and heavy. The reason I got a small laptop is so I *wouldn't* have 10-20 pounds of laptop + accessories on my shoulder.

A little late to this party I realize... but I have found the iGo products (http://www.igo.com/) to be perfect for this. I charge my x31 & my Moto cell phone on planes, in cars, and hotel rooms in the US w/o issue. Been using it for nearly 2 years, and I'm still as happy as can be.

You can find the iGo line at RadioShack and a few other places, and Kensington also sells these products under their own brand name at even more retailers (CompUSA for one).

Just checked the Targus site and their products, like those of Kensington, appear to be rebadged iGo.

seatguru.com is also a great resource to see the seating configurations on many aircraft and sometimes it also includes where the power sockets are on the planes.

I see American has power on the MD83. Can anyone confirm this? I dont think any of my flights had power in the seats.
