Half the expected memory for a X20 Type 2662

#1 Post by DoubleStew » Fri Dec 23, 2005 9:39 am

I bought an X20 for my wife off eBay and it came with the standard 64mb of memory.

She now has all sorts of things installed and was experiencing screen freezing / crashes so I thought it may help to upgrade the memory.

I bought a PNY 256mb 133MHz SODIMM SDRAM which is double sided ( I think this is the case as it has 4 black rectangles on both sides) for £25. It installed in the slot no problem but when I right click on My Computer and go to properties it tells me that I only have 192 mb of RAM? This looks suspiciously like (256/2) + 64.

Why am I only getting half the RAM I should?

Thanks for any advice you mave have.

I believe that the problem is that you picked up PC133, when it should have been PC100, low density Ram. The 256mb Low density ram should have 16 chips, 8 on each side. (the black squares that you referenced)

even tho its pc133 it shouldnt be a problem. but it need to be low density like has been previously mentioned. u will need chips on each side or else only half the ram will be recognized.

Well it looks like I bought the wrong RAM then. It has chips on both sides but its the wrong density. Still seems strange that only half gets recognised. At least I didn't spend a fortune and I'm still getting some bang for my bucks.

If it is recognising half am I right in thinking it does actually work?

Thanks for the advice guys.

it will work but only the ram that's recognized will be useable.
