Which OS to run on 800MHz 5400RPM 640MB X22?
Which OS to run on 800MHz 5400RPM 640MB X22?
I got an X22 last week and it's running pretty quick on Win 2000, but I ordered a 5400 RPM drive and some additional memory to max it out and I'm wondering which OS I should run to get maximum speed.
I have Win 2000 Pro (clone existing drive), Win XP Home (my usual preferred OS), and Win XP Pro (in my experience slower than HOME at everything (my main is a 3.0 GHz HP with 1.5 G mem and a 7200 180 G HD).
Anyway, could I get some opinions/suggestions/explanations on your preferences? It'd be helpful to me and perhaps others, too.
Cheers--
Silo

My X22 is configured exactly as yours (640MB RAM and 5400RPM drive) and I find Windows 2000 to be fast adn stable. I've debated putting XP Pro on it, and will do so when my office upgrades their server from NT4 to Server 2003 sometime this new year. Right now, the ancient server's domain settings make it a real pain in the a$s to work with XP.

The thread title caught my eye. If I had an 800GHz laptop, I would be running the latest and greatest versions of everything.
Otherwise it were and 800MHz laptop that supported speedstep, I'd more than likely be running XP on it.

From my experience, WinXP Pro (I have never used XP Home) starts up faster than Win2K, although after starting up, Win2K is faster than WinXP during normal use **on older machines** such as one with 233MHz/4200RPM/128MB. Silo's new X22 has very good specifications and I bet WinXP would be faster than Win2K both during and after startup.

I agree. My only reason for keeping Win2K on my similar X22 is because of the ancient NT4 domain at my office that for some reason is easy to log onto with Win2K and almost impossible with XP. We are replacing NT Server 4 with Server 2003 sometime this year, and once we do, Win2K is history.

I have a new copy of XP Home so I guess I'll use that when the drive arrives. Newegg not so fast over holiday weekend, alas. Just got notice of shipping today; ordered Friday.
I also need to look into internal wireless in the X22--how is that done? Or is it done? Right now I'm using Linksys PCMCIA card.

eCS is a good choice!
There are those who have had great success running eComStation (myself included) on Thinkpads. Check out http://www.os2warp.be for others running OS/2 or eCS on Thinkpads.
