X21 - Can the keyboard be "washed?"... spilled som

#1 Post by johniemi » Sun Jan 01, 2006 9:58 am

My friend made my new year's eve by spilling whisky in my X21 keyboard. It now doesn't work but I am using an external keyboard. Is there some way of cleaning up the keyboard or should I just search for a replacement part?

Also, I am from Finland so I have the keys Ö, Ä, Å on the keyboard; can I just buy an american keyboard and replace the american keys with the ones from my finnish keyboard - i.e., are the keyboard layouts the same but just the keys are a bit different in different countries? I just counted the keys and I have a total of 86 keys on the x21 keyboard.

PS. Quick help needed... this is my primary business laptop, rugged, small and inexpensive to fix in case something like the above happens ;)

You might be able to remove the keyboard and check underneath to see if any of the whiskey got through, and try to clean it up. Just be sure to leave it turned off for a while after cleaning it. If the problem is under certain keys, you might be able to carefully pry those keys off and clean underneath them, then replace the keys again.

If all else fails, then you could replace the keyboard.
