X3 Ultrabase questions

#1 Post by NecessaryEvil » Tue Jul 13, 2004 12:43 am

I'm thinking about getting an Ultrabase for my X31.

I do plan on using the additional battery support, and also plan on putting a DVD-ROM (or possibly even a DVD/CDRW combo drive) in it.

Questions are:
1. Does it drain from both batteries at the same time, or does it drain from one until empty, then start draining from the other?
1a: if it drains 1 at a time, does it drain the ultrabase's first?

2. What kind of drive do I need to look for to have it be compatible? (i.e. would a DVD-ROM from a T22 work?, or do I have to look for something in particular for it to fit properly?)

I'm looking at doing this on ebay so it'll cost me less (about half) what it would from IBM. (That is, unless someone here wants to sell me their's)

1. I believe it drains from the ultrabase one first, then the computer one.

2. It takes the normal ultrabay 2000 drives, so the T22 DVD would work perfectly fine.

Another question. I'm about to order it...but 1 last thing.

if I have the UltraBase installed on the X31, can I boot off the DVD-ROM I'll have installed? Or will I need to continue using the external USB DVD-RW to load an OS?

if I get a yes to the above, that means I can sell off my Targus PCMCIA DVD-ROM...

Yes, you will be able to boot from the Ultrabase's DVD-ROM.

Furthermore, the Ultrabase DVD is not considered an external device, but an internal secondary IDE device, so anything that does not work with external optical drives should work with it.
