X41 Newbie question

Hi,

1. I did not buy an external dvd drive for the unit and need to buy one since I can't load any software without an optical drive. Do I have to buy one from lenovo that is made for the X41 or will any external usb dvd drive work fine.

2. As I was booting up my X41 for the first time instead of the normal windows xp setup the computer started doing a fat 32 to ntfs file conversion what gives??

I can't answer your second question, but for the first one....you can use any external CD, DVD, CDRW without any problems. Although, if you'd like things to work smoother, i would recommend the X4 Media Slice. This way you can add a floppy, Optical device, and much more.

you can also:
1) Install your software over the network if you have another computer with an optical drive
2) Copy the instalation files to a SD card or flash drive, again, using another computer.

I think I can answer the Fat 32 thing. Let me please preface my responce by saying, I am new too.
My X41 did the "fat" conversion too. I believe this is the computer pulling and installing the "factory installed" software (XP and Utilities) off the harddrive partition and making it useable. This is only a guess... As this is a forum for knowledge any other insight would be helpful.

I do not believe you can install Windows from an SD card because it is not a bootable drive.

My X41 also did the Fat32 conversion.

You can use any external optical drive, I'm using an HP.
