Will a 100gb hard drive work in an X24?

#1 Post by Jumphog » Thu Jan 19, 2006 7:31 am

Im just about to order some parts and was going to get a new 60gb drive for my X24, but the shop has suddenly run out of stock.
Ive now got the choice of getting a 80gb seagate - ST98823A or a 100gb toshiba - MK1032GAX.
They both seem to be quiet and fast, but will the 100gb be recognised properly by the X24? Ive searched around and seen someone mention a 80gb working, so that should probably be OK, anyone know if 100gb will be as well?

Well I ordered the 100gb drive - as long as it works I shouldnt run out of space in a hurry!
After a bit more searching around I found that the x24 uses the intel 830 chipset which has an ATA-100 ide controller, so from the low level point of view it can cope with upto 127gb drives. The bios on the other hand.. well Ill find out soon.

Bios 1.31 implemented support for harddrives over 80 Gb, so should be okay with 100 Gb if you have one of the latest bios'. I am thinking of getting one 100 Gb myself. Please report back if you get it working without troubles. :)

Using a 7K100/16Mb cache drive here; installation was a snap.

I got the time to install the 100gb toshiba drive and its fine. Ive got bios 1.31 - theres a 1.32 out but all it does is change the volume key beeps, so I didnt bother upgrading.
Observations so far: Its a little bit noisier than my old drive (a 40gb 5k80) - it almost sounds like a quiet fan whereas I couldnt really hear the old one. Its a good bit faster though, ~29mb/s write vs 22mb/s.
