TO X41 OWNERS

#1 Post by thinkpadneophyte » Tue Jan 24, 2006 11:20 am

I've never had a ThinkPad and was thinking about buying the X60, but just decided that I don't want to wait months to get it. It seems that the X41 (or 40?) would do what I need (I use Word, Excel, Quicken and financial Web sites) and is available now.

I don't think I need the duo core processor. That seems to be the biggest difference between the X60 and X41, or am I wrong about that? The long battery of the X60 was appealing. Can you tell me how long the charge lasts on the X41? Have you been happy with the X41? Do you know if there were issues with the X41 that were addressed and improved in the X60? The fingerprint identification that the X60 has and the X41 has and the X40 doesn't, seems like a good thing. Is it? I have a PowerBook with an optical drive. Has it been an annoyance to have to use something external? Any advice at all about what to buy would be appreciated. I'm finding it very hard to figure out what I should do. THANK YOU!

The biggest difference between X60 and X41/40, besides the facts u just mentioned, is the speed of the hard drive. The new ones use a 2.5" @ 5400, the same that u have in your powerbook, and X41/40 got a 1.8" @ 4200, same as in iBooks.

The lack of an optical drive hasn’t really bothered me since I have a desktop at home which I’ve used as my primary computer. After getting the X41 I’ve realized that I don’t really need a desktop and that the ThinkPad satisfies my needs, so I’m probably going to buy an external DVD-burner and get rid of the big [censored] desktop. An external optical drive, an external hard drive and a screen should be just enough for my daily chores (Internet, Word/Excel, P2P,Movies and Music). When u bring the X41 to work or to school u hardly ever need an optical drive, if u do have to get some files u can always use a USB-memory or get the files from the Internet.

The battery life is ok, u get about 2.5h-3h on a 4 cell battery depending on what you are doing and obviously about 5.5h using an 8 cell battery. I usually use the 4 cell battery since its really light weight and u can plug your computer in almost anywhere on campus (Stockholm University).

All in all I think the computer is great and far better than the laptops I’ve had previously (Dell, HP and Acer).

I had a T42 and now have an X41Tablet and I love it. I concur with opinions of above post except I only use 8-cell battery (and have a backup 8-cell) and it is fine for me. I just added 1GB stick of RAM to make it 1.5 GB. I have the external USB DVD writer drive and it works fine.

I have used the X40 and X41 Tablet; they are both excellent Thinkpads. :)

I am very happy with my X41. However, given an available X60, I would buy the X60.

My logic would be that I want the battery life with a slim battery. For me, the "slow" hard disk drive is not a performance issue, but then I use my X41 to write large academic documents and have 1.5GB of RAM.

So, for me, battery life is worth considering but the disk drive RPM does not matter.

Happy with my X41, but I would wait a few weeks for the X60 without hesitation ...

The hd speed is a non issue for me as well as I mainly use it for web surfing, word, excel, and the occasional DVD watching. I don't use the CD drive most of the time, so that's a non issue as well.

Depends on your usage and whether this will be your primary computing device. For travel, the X40/41 is the perfect size.
