512mb PC133 and X22 - questions

#1 Post by Yossarko » Tue Feb 07, 2006 9:53 am

Hey,

I read the X22 could support 640 mb of ram (128+512) so I purchased a 512meg stick of memory (SODIMM PC133 144pin) and added it to the system. Turning the computer on results on system beeps and not booting.

What can I do? Will upgrading the bios work? A setting in the bios? Why doesn't this work. I know the X22 is PC133 and supports 640 so why doesn't it work? With 128mb installed with the system, and a total possible 640mb supported, and only one other slot, there's no other possible combination than 512+128 so obviously 512mb sticks are supported! Right?

At the very least, could I somehow remove the keyboard and access the primary memory slot to install the 512mb stick there? And have only 512mb of ram?

Thanks a lot

Is it hight density RAM stick or low density RAM stick? Low density is 8 chips on each side of the stick, and high is only 4 chips on each side.

I've tried 8 chips on a side and it does the same thing as what happened to you. Fortunately, it was 512MB ram that a friend gave me for free.

If you read the other thread I bumped up recently in this forum, there's a reference to the X22 using high density RAM.

I ordered high density ram, and it should arrive in a couple of days.

Well, the plastic sticker has LOW written on it, but I have four chips...

What do you think? High or Low? And should I upgrade the BIOS?

Weird. I'm just stating what I know based on the other thread in this forum.

However, I'll be receiving my 512MB RAM tomorrow. I'll let you know how that goes.

I have an X22 with 640 megs RAM.

The SODIMM I have, has 8 chips per side for 16 total. Actually it has this odd configuration with 6 chips in a row, and 2 of them stuck up top like an afterthough. I think I got it from TigerDirect but I didn't really pay any attention to low/high at the time, just plugged it in and it worked.

What Type is your X22, 2662-????. I had the same 512MB RAM chip config as yours, 6 lined up and 2 on top, but it didn't boot.

2662-9EU. Perhaps you just had a defective stick?

I rely a lot on http://www.crucial.com/ they have a menu-choice widget you can use to find the right memory for your machine.

It worked in an old gateway laptop I had before. I use crucial for when I'm upgrading the computers at work, but for myself I like to be cheap. Crucial wants to charge me $130 for 512MB. I paid $95 with 2 day shipping from zipzoomfly. I'll have it tomorrow and I'll see how it goes.
