does the system stops charging the battery on itself?

#1 Post by jones » Sun Feb 12, 2006 7:09 am

hi

i read some information about handling the battery to ensure the most capacity. http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Maintenance says "avoid charging if battery is nearly full".

now i wondered if my x41 stops charging the battery when it is full. propably there is something like a switch which disconnects the battery from the ac when fully charged.

so, are there any differences between removing the battery and keeping the battery plugged in while on ac?

regards,

jones

Yes, the battery will stop charging when it's full. It also won't recharge the battery if it's only 98% full. I don't know when it will recharge again, but if the battery is still mostly full, it won't charge again.

I believe the default charge threshold for Thinkpads nowadays is 96% and you can change it with the Battery Maximizer Utility.

but does the thinkpad bypass the battery when it is full? because a battery still connected to the power supply wears even it is fully charged and is not used to feed the notebook.

my essential question is, if there are any differences between removing the battery and keeping the battery plugged in while on ac?

The battery doesn't charge while on AC when it's full.
The only benefit you get by removing the battery is that it might have a longer life-span due to lower storage temperatures. Li-Ion batteries degrade over time, and degrades faster in higher temperatures.

But normally, you don't need to remove the battery.

I have an older laptop (3-3.5 years old) with a Li-Ion battery. I haven't removed the battery once and it's still as good as new. This should answer your question.

Hi all,

Does x24's Battery Maximizer Utility has the options to change the default charge threshold?

Cheers

:D Should it be better if the battery is fully charge, remove and keep inside the refrigerator until next use? :D

Lithium batteries degrade constantly from the day they are manfactured to the day you take them to the recycler. The degradation increases with temperature and also with voltage. So best case (longest service life) would be storage at the lowest possible voltage and lowst possible temperature.

However, they also self discharge very slowly and should never be allowed to drop below 3V per cell. Because of this, the recommended method of storage is to store them at 50% charge and at room temperature or below.

Removing a charged battery and placing it in the refrigerator will increase its service life. Removing a partially charged battery and placing it in the refrigerator will increase its service life even more. Removing a DISCHARGED battery and placing it in the refrigerator will possibly damage it if the voltage falls below 3V per cell.

How much service life you gain by cooling a battery while in storage is an open question, however. I personally don't think the small increase in life is worth the added hassle of removing and replacing the battery.
