X32 When and where?????????

#1 Post by Imran » Thu Jul 22, 2004 11:46 am

Hi

everyone

Im posting from the Uk, you guys seriously have it good with IBM in the US, We have no access to direct selling from IBM and are limited by the handful of models they decide to release within a range.

That aside when is happening with the x31 , is it indeed fasing out, will there be a replacement, the x40 really doesnt cut it as a replacement for the x31

So any news on the X32????????

Totally agree. It really sucks not having the choice in the UK that you guys in the states get. Also a pain having to go to an IBM partner most of whom only really want to deal with corporate accounts.

Even after getting a list of partners from IBM, it took me quite a bit of phoning around trying to find someone who was willing to sell me a X30.

Also waiting to see what is going to replace the X31.

There will be no X32 - the line has moved forward to the X40 and any subsequent models will be based on that.

I'm sorry if I sound so bored, but repeating myself makes me like that - why not buy your laptop from Bill in the US? I made substantial savings, even including the shiping costs and customs, by purchasing from Bill - AND I had the same choice as anyone else living in the US in terms of models available.

When Bill sent the machine to me here in France, it took the usual 3 days FedEx (+ customs) so what the heck...

Sometimes Bill isn't the cheapest option. I got a brand new X31 from IBM directly for $1300 CAD when the list price was $2800 CAD. I truly respect what he does and really do appreciate the forum, but for $1500, you'd probably do the same.

The point I was trying to make wasn't really regarding the price, more the availability of more models in the US than in the UK. Sure the price is important, but I consider the choice of many more models equally as important, particularly when it's my hard earned cash...

And hey, let's bear in mind the US doesn't get as many models as Europe and especially Japan when you look at the broad spectrum of laptops. We don't get the Sony X505 over here, for instance. I get Laptop magazine here in the US and see lots of models from companies that they don't send here, believing we're obsessed with "bigger is better" thinking.

The problem with Europe is not the selection, it is the price. Yes, I can get anything an American can and even more, but we pay pretty much 60% extra for the exact same laptop as people in the USA.

Even with Bill sending me my laptop, paying the FedEx AND the customs charges (VAT) I ended up paying nearly 2000€ LESS that the same config purchased here in France - as they say in the US (so I'm led to believe) go do the math - for the life of me I cannot understand IBM Frances pricing policies, and while an honest, legal alternative exists, I'm certainly going to make full use of it.
