X32 Performance

#1 Post by Olsen » Sat Mar 11, 2006 8:42 am

Hi :D
I'm about to buy a new laptop. I'm currently running a ASUS M6800N with 60gb 5400Rpm, and 1gb ram. It perfectly fast for me, but it's annoying to lug around.

What I need:
Everyday use
A slim and light PC. I study and carry it with me always.
I program once in a while but mostly it will be used for wordprocessing etc.

Hobby
I take photos with a DSLR which means large RAW files (10mb).
I edit these photos in Photoshop CS2 - I have an external monitor so the 12'' screen won't be a problem.

The X32 that im concidering:
Intel Pentium M 1,8 GHz (M745), 80Gb 5400Rpm Hitachi, 1Gb pc2700 ram.

Question
Will this setup be sufficient? I know it's allrigt with XP and Wordprocessing, but what about Photoshop CS2? I'm not that much into the technical stuff, but as far as I've heard, the 16mb Radeon doesn't mean a thing in Photoshop - right?

Anny comments appreciated - and excuse me my english.

Can't comment on actual X32 speed "feeling" since I don't own a X32 but my 1GB T42 1,7GHz is fast enough for my GIMP and Corel work. The biggest bottleneck is clearly the HDD speed, not the processor or memory. But as long as your card has descent 2D acceleration you'll be fine in Photoshop. I've used Photoshop since v3 with starting with 2MB video cards and as long as there are drivers which do not lag generally in Windows, Photoshop will do just fine.

10MB files are just a little sneeze for that configuration so I wouldn't worry about it.

My x32 has the same processer and ram but a faster hard drive, which shouldn't make a big difference with photoshop. Photoshop cs2 runs great on my x32. The 12 inch display is the limiting factor and you already have that taken care of so go for it. It's a great little laptop. You might even be able to set up a dual display and put your pallets and tools on the laptop display leaving you more room on the external. It's also very nice having a built in CF card slot for us DSLR users to upload our cards in the field. Best of luck!

My X24 does fine with CS2 (after I upgraded from 256mb of ram to 640mb) , so I would imagine you would have not problems with an X32.

I run CS2 with my X32 (specs in my signature) without any problems. I read somewhere that as long as you have lot of RAM all photoshop versions just fly. The more RAM you'll have the better the performance. I'm running LARGE RAW files as well and I have an external 1600x1200 Samsung TFT as my main monitor editing pictures while my X32 display handles all the palettes. Almost the perfect setup. I might get the larger docking station and add a more powerful graphics card to it (with DVI out to the external screen).
