Just fitted a new Hitachi 60GB 7200RPM HDD to my X30
Hi
Just thought I'd air my views of the HDD upgrade. Only been using the new HDD for an hour or so but have go to say that I can notice how much faster it is over the old IBM 40GB 4200rpm HDD.
Boot times are quicker, apps pen quicker and general usability seems quicker (probably because of quicker paging). It is also more silent than the old drive when seeking. The old drive used to click a little.
I have not noticed any difference in heat levels between the two drive but then I have not 'thrashed' it yet. But under normal working conditions it's the same as the old drive.
The only slight draw back is that the new drive seems to hum very very faintly which also produces a very very slight vibration. Sounds like a small fan. It's hardly noticable but the old drive didn't do this but then wasn't spinning so fast. When I lift the notebook off the desk the hum virtually dissappears so is being amplified by my old wood desk.
I haven't tried to see how the new drive affects my battery life but will check shortly and will report.
So far I am very happy with the new drive.

I've performed the same upgrade to my X30 - the drive does get hot over time; it's the first time I've had a laptop get too hot to keep on my lap. Small price for the space and improved performance; makes using hibernate a breeze, the laptop resumes almost as fast as it comes out of suspend.

Wow. I just lifted my laptop up and touched the bottom. It is HOT! The palm rest and keyboard didn't seem any warmer so I didn't think there was any difference in heat between the new and old drive. But you are right. It proabably is too warm to have on your lap after a while.
Did you notice any difference in battery life with the new drive?

Yeah, I put one into a Toshiba M-15, and the battery lasted 8hrs.+
Emanuel,
I've got my 7K60 equipped T40 on my lap as I type this and I honestly can't feel any increased heat in either the palmrest or the base.
Just curious.
How's the Roller, still got it?
Regards,
James
I feel almost stupid to ask you this after all the years we've known each other, but are you certain it's the HD that's causing the increased heat?epbrown wrote:I've performed the same upgrade to my X30 - the drive does get hot over time; it's the first time I've had a laptop get too hot to keep on my lap.

James, this is an old thread, but it was definitely the hard drive - it died not long after. Tech support and I decided it was somehow running full out all the time, even when in suspend mode. That combined with all the jostling around in cars and trains seemed to kill it off - replaced within a couple of weeks, no trouble with the current one in terms of heat or performance.
The Rolls-Royce is long gone - I sold it last summer, almost a year after someone ran into me in it. Once the insurance companies worked everything out (it was totaled), I decided to use the settlement to buy more Porsches (up to 3 now). A RR club member in Arkansas towed the wreck home to restore it - he sends me updates and the car is coming right along, though he's using more Bondo that I'd be comfortable with.
