Quick question: What is the difference: X21, X22, X23 ?

Just as it says...haven't been able to find much information other than CPU speed bumps.

Are there any meaningful changes besides that?

Not really, IIRC, X23 was the first one to have integrated Bluetooth and Wireless, other than that nothing of note.
760XL, 560, 560E, 570, 600, 600E, 600X, T20, T21, T23, T40, T41p, T42, X20, X23, X24, X31, X60s, X60T, X200s. I should *really* get a cheaper hobby...

My X22 has integrated wireless.

Here's another question.


Will they support booting off of a USB CD-ROM?

I know my X30 and X31 did...but I'm not sure on the older systems.

I'm currently looking at a 21 and a 22 on ebay...I don't want to spend (much) more than $250 on a laptop for my current needs (portable FTP server for 6 months)

Yes, they support booting from a USB CD-ROM and I think almost anything USB (Flash drive, floppy). I've got bot USB floppy and USB CD-ROM with my X22.

X22 onward had infrared port
X22 onward had internal wireless option
X22 onward had Pentium IIIm cpu, larger cache, much better performance

X22 should be minimum cut off for buying an X series
