X40/X41 updates - shift key 'sticking'

#1 Post by Will » Wed Apr 05, 2006 1:08 pm

Hi all

Since running latest Thinkpad updates have come across the following : when navigating around Word or Excel using arrow keys at random a 2, 4, 6 or 8 is inserted (as if shift key has been used on keypad). This is particularly annoying in Excel since figures in cells are changed. Three X40s and two X41s are affected to date. Am working with Lenovo engineers, rolling back updates one at a time (BIOS update back to 2.01) but haven't isolated issue, problem still occurring. Obviously stopped updating laptops once problem became apparent but the affected users are no longer shiny happy people.

All using XP SP2, Office 2003 SP2 (updated previously). Has anyone else come across this?

thanks,

Will

I've got the extact same setup (SP2, Office 2003) but not problems like what you mentioned. What updates were installed?

I've got the most recent version of the Keyboard Customizer Utility installed, and that would have been my first guess as to what is going on with your setup(s), but i'm not experiencing the same problems you describe.

I do not have the most recent Trackpoint Accessibility Features installed (i'm still on 1.10.0.0), but doubt that would be the cause.

Keep us posted on what Lenovo says about this...

Well, Lenovo advised us to roll back BIOS update from 2.05 to 2.02. This didn't help so rolled back to 2.01 - same thing. We then rolled back the Embedded Controller program from 1.01 to 1.00. Testing so far is looking positive.

I'll keep you posted, the arrow keys getting sticky at random was becoming a right pain to users.

Well it looks like it was the Embedded Controller Programme 1.00 to 1.01 update that caused this. Specifically :

*(New) Support "ThinkPad NumLock" control.

Have rolled back affected laptops (six in total), issue resolved. Look out for Lenovo to issue update 1.02 shortly...

I just wonder why others aren't affected by this. Strange.
