X31: Which RAM type for upgrade / Which 7200rpm hhd is best

#1 Post by ibmguy » Thu Apr 06, 2006 3:22 pm

I would like to boost the performance of my beloved X31.

1. Can I plug in a 2GB S0-RAM? Which RAM speed would you recommend when I consider to move the RAM to a T60 (when I buy it)? Or do both take the same type?

2. Which 7200rpm hdd (80..100GB) woul you recommend. It should be fast and stay silent even after using it for 6 months. Most hdds are getting noisy after using them for a while.

Your input would be appreciated very much!

looks like you buy some f'd up hdds. they r not supposed to get noisy unless they are failing...
as to memory it is pc2700 go to crucial.com and use their memory configurer to pick correct memory type.

I put a 7200 Hitachi 100 MB in my X32 and am quite satisfied. Not utterly silent, but close enough.

Are you sure it's only 100 MB? ;-)

I was told that if you want performance, go for Hitachi; if you want silence, Fujishi is the way to go.

I was happy with my Samsung 5400rpm 80GB for my former T40. After a year of extensive usage, it was noisier than it used to be but MUCH MUCH quieter than the original Hitachi 4200rpm 30GB HDD came with the unit from IBM.

Anyone know if the X31's will pitch a fit if I put PC3200 memory in? I've got two spare sticks of 512MB around here.

I've got an extra 1 GB stick of Crucial for 1.3 GB total, and a 60 GB 7200 rpm Hitachi drive, both in use in my x31 1.7 since early last year. It's very quiet, although there is a slight vibration from the drive (you get used to it) but the little laptop flies ... I'll take lots memory and a fast disk over a faster CPU any time.
