#1 Post by Legend66 » Sat Apr 08, 2006 1:39 am

hi there just bought a thinkpad X22 off ebay for £130, can i just confirm that ALL x22s have integrated wireless? (seems to mentoined in all reviews) but the seller says i will need a pcmcia card? all other specs on the listing are consistent with an X22, and the picture is also an x22!?!?!?

No, sorry, only two models of X22 (2662-9EU and 2662-9DU) shipped with the combination WiFi/Modem card from the factory and have the antennae in the display.

James

My X22 (2662-9DU) has integrated wireless in addition to ethernet and modem. It's probably the first Thinkpad with all three.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)

Sorry, missed that one in the TAWBOOK.PDF.

No, the X22 wasn't the first Thinkpad with all three options, although it was the first among the X series.

Ooops, I meant to say the first X series. Looks like the A22m, introduced 5 months earlier than the X22, was the first Thinkpad to have all three options.

My X22 does not have the built in antenna, but 3Com has a great solution, the XJack wifi card --> http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/deta ... 3CRPAG175B

Completely flush when not in use, perfect for travelling.

Wow, that is cool, so the antenna part locks in like the old ibm modem card?

Correct, because the old IBM modem card was a branded X-Jack card.

I've recomended these cards for years Mike, especially in the 600 series and Transnote where they match the laptop's overall design.

The latest a/b/g card is a bit costly but worth it. The older 11b cards can often be found on eBay for as little as $10, especially the "Office Connect" version.

Just be aware that there is a fairly well known issue with some of these cards. When the card is installed, the antenna can be very reluctant to 'click' back in again. As I have experienced with the dozen I have recently purchased.

Yes, the "Office Connect" cards are particularly notorious for that.

Requires changing the orientation of the card, e.g. by standing the laptop on edge first, and then pushing the antenna in.

But even this little hassle is worth it as I've always appreciated the fact that the cards have the unique ability to be turned on and off with the antenna.

Antenna out, the card is on. Antenna in, the card is off.

Those look good, but i want to keep my PCMCIA slot available for other purposes as i only have one:) Well, if there are no antenna i'll just have to buy some and spread them under the keyboard!

Either will work. I've found it to be rare that I need the pc card slot for two things at once. I use a USB 2.0 pc card for iPod sync's, then just put the wifi card back in.

Good luck.

After reading these suggestions, I bought a old 3com 802.11b xjack card off ebay today for $10 shipped. I figure it will give me the chance to find out if it will work satisfactorily for my needs. If it does I may buy a faster version. If it does not I will think about converting my, new to me --1 week, X24 to internal wireless, but I figure that will cost about $100 (wireless LCD cover from IBM, antennas, and mpci card) and be a bit of a hassle. In any case I am only out pocket change. I will report back with my opinion of the thing after I have used it a bit.

Sounds like a good plan. After you receive it, check www.3com.com for any firmware updates. They are available for some of the XJack wifi cards.

Following up on the 3Com Xjack 802.11b I bought from ebay.

The card, a 3com 3CRWE62092B, arrived today. I put it in the X24 and loaded the drivers I had previously downloaded from 3com's website. XPP showed the card as working properly, so I ran into town to try it on the library's WiFi. It worked fine. Downloads in the 45KBps range, and certainly good enough for browsing. I may not to be in a hurry to upgrade it to a faster and many times more expensive version.

With the antenna retracted there is almost nothing sticking out of the X24 sub-notebook so storing and carrying it is not a problem at all. With it extended it still is not as big as most pc-card wifi cards, but it does look a bit delicate. On a table or desk it would be fine, sitting up in bed with it in your lap you probably would have to be somewhat careful. All in all I think these Xjack WiFi pc-cards are a resonalbly practical substitute for built in wireless. If money were no object I would prefer the built in, but since it is these cards will work fine. Now I have to get a router for the apartment.

My thanks to JHEM and underclocker for recommending these cards.
