Suggestions for non IBM USB combo drive to use with X30?

#1 Post by CyberDude » Wed Jul 28, 2004 6:04 am

Can anyone recommend a small and light non IBM USB optical combo drive. It should also not have any problems when booting from it.

Want to avoid making a mistake.

I'd reccomend purchasing an empty 5.25 inch USB 2.0 drive enclosure and a standard dual format DVD burner such as the NEC 2500A. This will save you money and allow you to chosse what brand components to use. The X31 will boot from this just fine. Apparently it will not boot from the firewire port, but I have not tried this myself. Good luck.

I picked up the usb 2.0 dvd/cdrom drive from targus at around $175 (original price, minus a 20% off coupon found on google). Works well, usb powered, thinner than a regular drive but obviously more expensive.
