X41 and USB 2.0 Super Multi-Burner Drive

#1 Post by RandomWhim » Wed Apr 12, 2006 10:53 am

I'm looking to get an X41 tablet.

I'm not sure if I want to get an Ultrabay Slim Drive for the dock I'll order, or a USB 2.0 Super Multi-Burner Drive (http://tinyurl.com/m4tu7 - ibm.com).

The Super Multi-Burner drive is supposed to be able to function without a power adapter when plugged in to two USB 2.0 ports. But I see that of the x41's 2 USB 2.0 ports, only one is "powered".

Does anyone know if the x41 tablet is able to power the USB 2.0 Super Multi-Burner Drive without a seperate AC adapter for the drive?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, I have one and that is how I use it, without the separate adapter. It burns more slowly without the adapter though.

The "powered USB" of the X4*-series is possibly not what you are thinking of. Both USB-ports provide the usual power to USB-devices. But in addition the left port is the "powered USB"-port - this means that there is an second, smaller port beneath it which can provide extra power, if you have a special cable that is compatible to this double-port-configuration. The external multi-burner may come with that type of cable, but better check that yourself. These double ports are more or less IBM-only and rare even on ThinkPads, thus you won't find many devices that support them.

X41Tablet has the "double" sized USB on the left side, with the smaller one for the power.
