added 1gb ram and...

#1 Post by dorin » Tue Apr 18, 2006 10:34 am

now if i activate the hybernation file gets out of free space exactlty 1.5gb (how much memory i have)

is this normal? can i reduce hybernation file? how?

and honestly i cannot say any difference in how faster the comp boots...not at all, unless you concider 2 seconds (timed the boot time in comparation) a big difference.

have to use it more to see any fastar reaction from 512mb to 1.5 mb

but, hybernation file....help!

thanks alot!

You are correct in that the hibernation file will be exactly the size of the installed RAM. You can't reduce it as far as I know because that is how the feature works. More RAM doesn't always mean a faster boot time, but may allow for faster performance with RAM intensive activities. More RAM does mean slower times in and out of hibernation as the file loads to RAM. For most people it isn't a good investment on a dollar/value basis. For you, who knows. What software do you use? Use your laptop for a week or more and see if you notice other improvements as a result of the added RAM.

Good Luck,

Yeah, that's why I almost always turn off hibernation. I was forced to use it on a Dell Inspiron 8200 that I used to own, because that machine had problems recovering from the standby mode, so I used hibernation as a substitute.

ok, so after few hr i can say that boot time (till fully loaded) its down from 90 sec to 70sec, and aplications like photoshop cs2 start a little bit faster (not very different) but it digest raw images waaaaay much faster!!!

in rest aplications seems to have a slighty faster response, anyway i;m bound to the 4200hdd.

wanted to update it cause that the only thing i can update on my x40 and cause lots of times i was running out of memory.

and hibernation, sweet utility but scr*w you! 1.5 its something when i have only 40 gb! standby here i come!

thanks guys,

Another thing you may consider editing is to set your page file larger.

Actually I'm not sure if this will make that big a difference in XP, but back in the old 95/98 days, by setting the pagefile to a set value (as opposed to a range), it prevented windows from constantly resizing the page file, thus saving time.

Of course, increasing your page file will create the same problem as hibernation... takes up more space.

Wish they would come out with 100gb 7200rpm 1.8inch drives  just kidding

Ha, this reminds me of one thing. I set the minimum and maximum sizes for the page file to be identical, so that Windows won't have to waste time readjusting it, and the computer should speed up a tad.

For RAM less than 512MB, I set the pagefile size at 1.5 times as big. But if there is 512MB or more RAM, I make the pagefile the same size as the RAM. This is not my invention, but I actually learned this from some website about tweaking WinXP.

I use no pagefile at all on my X41 (1.5 GB RAM), so far no problems in six months of use.

I use 1.5GB of RAM and still use the 1.5 x RAM figure for my page file because Bill Gates said so. I do everything Bill tells me to  . OK, maybe not EVERYTHING, but I DO have my min & max page file sizes set to 2304MB. To be fair I also ran it for a while with NO page file and noticed no problems. I then used 1536MB for a while and noticed no problems, so I figured why not just listen to Mr. Gates and go to 2304MB. Maybe if I kiss up some more I will get a $1-off coupon on his next OS.

p.s. My TRUE feeling is that I could probably have my cat walk on my number pad to enter a value and I would likely notice no issues, but I'm not all that demanding on a computer. Everyone should use what they feel is best for them, following whatever method they believe in. A Magic 8 Ball would be a great method too in my opinion. [Sorry Mr. Gates... can I still get that $1-off coupon?]

so my life with 1,5 gb ram (after 3 weeks of usage)

everybody with an x40 should do this upgrade! everything goes smoother! ok, on boot time only 20 sec faster but the programs start almost instantly (ms office for ex) and photoshop cs2 handles way much faster the .raw files!

so, its a must to upgrade to 1.5gb ram!

dorin

ps: do you think will ever be faster 1.8" hdd?!
