So I'm still looking for a good deal on an X31 (and I think I've found a couple - under 550 shipped) - but some of them have this "No OS" message on them.
However - I thought on this Thinkpads (at least newer models), that there was a "restore partition" on the Thinkpad that reverts everything back to factory settings. Is there anyway to check (outside of emailing seller and waiting for response, potentially losing auction) if this feature is available?
"This unit comes with no OS"

got a model number?
the ones I've seen that show this on IBMs site are usually purchased by large corporations (STATE FARM) that use their own image.

Well this is what I ended up (finally) settling for:
X31
I kept on going back and forth between this and the Z60T - since the Z60 only looked to be one lb heavier than the X31. . .and with the widescreen and build in CD/DVD. But the battery I read wasnt as good, and right now it was out of my price range.
So I settled on the above unit - even though its the "low end" X31 (I really wanted one of the 1.7's with the GIGA ethernet), it comes with the UltraBase and CDRW/DVD so I figured that was too good a deal to pass up - as alot of the auctions listed either didnt come with an UltraBase, or did but had no Bays.
I basically need this thing for travel, school and light home use - school because where I work has software and broadband limitations, that prevent me from getting deadlined work done quickly - and for home because its just not comfortable for me to be doing certain work on the computer anymore, and I find it much more relaxing and stimulating to be able to recline in my bed than bunched up at a desktop.
Ill see how I like the 31 - and check out the Z60T at a local Office Depot. Depending on performance, I may well upgrade - its just that battery life gets me - especially for when I go on vacations (13 hour plane rides to Tokyo - I NEED to have alt. means of entertainment).
