Need cable for IBM USB External CD-ROM drive

#1 Post by The Spirit of X21 » Thu May 04, 2006 12:18 pm

Hi folks,

There is a port on the CD-ROM drive with which I am not familiar. Does anyone know where I can find a cable that will allow me to connect this device to the USB port on my ThinkPad X21? Thanks.

On which model CDrom? Do you mean the brown/tan colored connector on the back of an Ultrabay CD-rom?

It's a black external device. I'll read off what it says on the back:

IBM USB Portable CD-ROM Drive
Part Number: 00N8239
FRU Number: 00N8244

Is it possible to order the cable for this drive directly from IBM? Thanks.

OK, the cable that you need is FRU 00N8245. The cable is $58.50 from Lenovo. I am sure that you can kind it elsewhere cheaper.

Any thoughts where? I have tried searching eBay but I can't seem to find anything, and the merchants I have checked online want around $80.
By the way, thanks for the input, everyone.

Your welcome. I just did a Froogle search and the cheapest was $57.33, in which case you'd be better off with the one from Lenovo, so that you know what your going to get.

Aside from that.....it might be best to just buy another external CD-rom, because I really don't think that it is worth the $60+ for the cable.

The drive is made by TEAC. Model # CD-210PU.

You can find seme on e-bay. Some are branded as DELL but they are the same drive. I did some search on the internet and they are ridiculously expensive.

For that kind of money you may be able to purchase an X2 media slice on e-bay. It will be faster than the external CD-rom.
