ACPI support on X20

#1 Post by pavedroad » Mon Aug 02, 2004 11:52 pm

Do all X20s have support for ACPI? I'm running XP and I tried installing the ACPI driver from IBM, but the install program says it can't run on my system.

Yes.

Do you mean this software package?

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4GXPEG

Now that's funny. By accident I managed to install exactly this driver on a system it wasn't even designed for, a ThinkPad 570 instead of the 570E. (I tried it once again -- in fact, it will even install cleanly on my custom-built desktop PC, with nothing at all from big blue in it.)

Are you sure your Windows XP is configured to run in ACPI mode?

Right-click on "My Computer", choose "Properties", in the window that opens choose the "Hardware" tab, then click on the "Device Manager" button. Is your "Computer" listed as an "ACPI-PC (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface)"?

If properly configured, it will have to look something like this:

Or is your computer listed as a "Standard-PC"? I suppose this could be the reason for all this trouble.

Regards,
Monty

Hi Monty, thanks for all that info! Unfortunately it is configured as Standard-PC. I've been googling around and the only way I have found to fix this is to reinstall windows. This is somewhat distressing since I updated this laptop to the latest BIOS (2.25) and WinXP didn't detect it as acpi during install. Any suggestions?

Just as I expected. Strange. Sorry, can't explain you why XP didn't install the ACPI HAL by default.

That's one option. Initiate the install, and when you're asked in a grey bottom line to press F6 in order to supply further drivers (this message pops up right at the beginning, just a few seconds after boot-up), press F5 instead. In the menu that appears you can now search for the entry "ACPI-PC" (it's somewhere at the very top) and choose to set up the PC as such manually.

Although this second option bears the danger that you might screw up your existing installation completely, you could try to follow these instructions:

Good luck and please report back whether you have been successful,

Hi, sorry it took so long to reply, my connection is really slow. Pressing F5 worked.
