x40 how do I get the hard drive out?

#1 Post by phr » Sat May 13, 2006 11:23 pm

My x40 HD is getting unrecoverable read errors on some sectors, and I want to upgrade the OS anyway, and I like to do that by installing from scratch (new HD) instead of upgrading in place anyway.

I got a new 1.8" 60GB HGST drive from newegg.com ($149.95) but now I don't see how to get the old drive out! I thought it was in a carrier like my old A20p, i.e. I took out the retaining screw and pulled on the enclosure thingie, but it's not coming out. I pulled pretty hard (don't want to break anything though) so I must be missing something. I removed a few nearby screws too.

What's the procedure?

Also, there are these two little holes with spring thingies underneath, in the front edge of the machine. I'm guessing those are contact points for the docking station or something, i.e. nothing to do with releasing the HD. Let me know if i'm wrong.

Thanks.

Edit: Hmm, found this:

That procedure is pretty similar to what I did, but I'll try following it more exactly. I think I'm missing something though, and/or my drive is stuck.

Did you watch the video? http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-54551

Greetings,

Open the cover slightly to gain access to the disk drive, and then pull the drive out.

Thanks Jeremy. I don't have the Flash plugin needed to watch the video, but as you suspected, I messed up because the drive handle was blocked by the closed laptop lid. Once I opened the lid, the caddy came right out. The caddy was glued to the drive and a pain in the neck to remove, but I eventually got it loose and transferred it to the new drive. I guess since I don't want to repeat that more often than necessary, I don't expect to put the old drive back into the caddy but will instead use it with an external USB adapter to get the remaining files off. Hmm, that won't be so easy because of the LVM filesystem on the drive. I guess I shoulda dumped the contents BEFORE removing the drive and prying it out of the caddy, oh well. I do have a several day old backup on another external drive and will try to figure out the situation with using LVM externally.

Anyway, the new drive is happily mounted in the X40 now, so I need to get the stuff together to install an OS on it. It should be pretty easy (famous last words).

Greetings,

I highlighted the word in bold for you because you said the minute you take out the screw, you start pulling the HDD. I will tell you what the video said. it said when you take out the screws, open the lid a bit and pull the HDD, LOL .

Finally you got that HDD out from your thinkpad. :P
