my X30 has no audio (and does not beep either) please help!

#1 Post by RageRover » Wed May 17, 2006 11:12 pm

I bought a used X30 last month. Took me a while to figure out how to install an OS, either than that, there has been no problems...except...no audio :(

I am running Windows XP. All the drivers are properly installed and windws says everything is working.

I've checked the settings in BIOS. I've enabled the "beeps." But even on startup the system does not give a "beep."

I've also installed Xandros Linux, and it too has no audio.

So, am I doing something wrong? Is is a motherboard problem?

Just to clarify, there is no sound from the speaker or the headphone jack.

Thanks

X30 will run sound only, if proper drivers from IBM/Lenovo are installed. WinXP drivers alone won't do.

Please run Lenovo Software Installer, install all appropriate drivers, then check again.

Have you tried upping the volyme on the buttons next to the access ibm-button?

I was quite suprised they bound by bios and not software controlled like most other extra buttons on other lappys..

I got the audio to work!! (I feel like an idiot! LOL)

All drivers were installed using IBM's/Lenovo's installer, and they were still not working.

I played around with the volume buttons on the keyboard another time, and it didn't work...but this time it did!

I just kept upping the volume on the keyboard and voila! I heard beeps!

If the mute is on (which is was in my case) the little speaker icon in windows will not show mute (unlike other computers which I've owned), which was also making me think the on-board audio chip was broken.

I'm happy, thanks for the help. I was about to send the computer back. Although I use it mostly for office work, I did want to watch Divx files when I travel.

I didn’t realize the keyboard controls are BIOS based (and not software, not 99% of computers out there).

I feel like such an idiot...I took the computer apart last night looking at every wire connection. I can take a computer apart, I can program...but I can't figure out how to use volume buttons!

A side not about the 4 year old x30 I bought, I bought it for school so I don't have to drag my 9+ pound 17" HP around. The quality and feeling of the IBM is just amazing! Even though it’s a used corporate notebook that’s a little beat-up, it reeks of quality. My 3 month HP on the other hand, is a plastic POS. From day one the LCD never closed well, and the entire computer flexes too much. I should have bought an IBM in the first place. I hope Lenovo is keeping up with IBM's quality.

For the past month my HP (dv8000) sits home collecting dust.
