X31...an expensive paperwheight!

#1 Post by cellardoor » Mon Jul 03, 2006 8:01 am

I am no computer expert, especially with laptops, although I have effected a few repairs. I have just bought an X31, had it for a week and it has ceased to function :( .
As it is powered up it flashes a warning 'thermal sensing error' and promptly turns it'self off again.
It cost me quite a lot of cash, and I am disapointed.
I took it to a repair shop, who said "new motherboard" and "several hundred pounds", which was ather dismaying.
However I have been studying electrical and electronic engineering for years, and feel that with some advice, and information of a 'repair manual' nature I can fix it. ANy advice from owners who have had similar problems and solved them, and any info on how to dismantle/repair this machine will be gratefully recieved.

I've never seen that particular failure before, but the error message would certainly lead me to check the cooling fan first.

Maybe a little thermal cooling compound like Arctic Silver 5 wouldn't hurt, either.

I'd also go online to lenovo's website and run the serial number. Most X31s had a 3-year warranty and yours might just still be covered. Doesn't matter if you are the original owner or not.

If it is covered, let the pros do it.
