X31 users, how hot does your LCD get? (pic)

#1 Post by Xy Hapu » Mon Jul 03, 2006 1:13 pm

I recently noticed that the back of the lid of my X31, toward the bottom, gets fairly hot--approximately as hot as the CPU area--and I was wondering if this was normal. I know that the LCD's inverter is in the area, but the heat goes past that to around where the lower backlight is situated. The upper backlight area doesn't seem to output any heat at all.

I was thinking that this might be the cause of another problem I have, which is that the bottom half of my LCD leaks backlight far more than the top half; perhaps the transistors near the heat are degrading? This results in a lighter colored screen toward the bottom, especially evident upon boot with the black background IBM logo.

To clarify, the heat is best felt from the back of the lid.

Thanks for your input.

Mine gets pretty hot too - right where your diagram puts the inverter. I haven't noticed any backlight or lcd problems from it though (yet, touch wood). I've had mine less than a year (Sept 2005) and it was brand new when I got it.

Proabably they all get hot. My X30 does as well. I suppose most modern notebooks do. Just checked one HP and one Lenovo laptops that have been running for couple of houres and yes, the temperature there noticeably higher than any other place, save the cpu location.

So far I haven't noticed any direct correlation between the inverter hotness and LCD problems. Then again, if it is hotter than just "regular hot", you might want to have it checked, to be on the safe side.

I`ve not had any heat issues at the the mentioned spot at all.

even after hours at highest brightness it only gets a bit below hand warm.

Thanks guys, I think I can pretty safely ignore the problem. Much of it is probably due to the high ambient temperature (85F, because of this annoying heatwave in the states) and my supposed backlight leakage problem just seems to be an artifact of crappy LCD's used in some notebooks (I looked at my sister's new Inspiron 6400 and it has the exact same discoloration . . . I seem to have been spoiled by my desktop LCD, or I'm just oversensitive to these kind of things).

Thanks again.
