What would you choose? X24 or X30?

The X24 has dedicated graphics chip, but the X30 has a bit better battery life. I definetely can't afford a X31, which is a big upgrade from both, so that's not an option. Any other significant changes between the 24 and 30?

The parallel port on the X30 looks sort of ugly, and i'd never use it. Any advice?

Both are pretty good machine. My wife owns a X24 and I used to use a X30 for around 2 days.

As I need the 1394 connection, So I probably go with a X30. But as far as performance is concerned, they are pretty much the same. I found X24 to be slim and more battery-friendly.

If price is similar, go with X30 for sure. If there is at least $50 difference, you may want to go with a X24 and save the $50 for an external DVD drive.

I have an X24 and it is an excellent machine. It is basically a T23, but more portable and beautiful, and lacking the bigger screen, second PC card slot, and Ultrabay 2000 of the T23 (but you get the last one from an X2 slice, which nowadays go for less than $30 in eBay).

When I got the X24 my main questions were whether it would perform like the T23, and whether it would run hotter than the T23. Like I said, the X24 runs just as fast as a T23, and it runs just as cool (actually, my X24 seems to run cooler than my T23, but that might be because I'm running Linux on it).

I don't have an X30, but I used an X31 briefly a while ago. Besides the obvious fact that the X31 is a newer machine with a Pentium M and integrated CF and Firewire, I prefer my X24 in the looks department. The X31 has a hump in the palmrest that I just find ugly, and I don't like the fact that the screen cover has an angular cut on the lower left corner. I think the X30 has the same chassis than the X31. Not sure about it though.

From what I heard, the X30 runs hotter than the X24. As far as the integrated Firewire goes, I can live with a PC card adaptor for both Firewire and USB2.

I would get the X24 in a heartbeat. If yours doesn't come with the X2 media slice, procure yourself one from eBay, since it will add a lot of functionality to your X24.

And, if you're interested in running Linux on your X24, be confident that you shouldn't run into any problems (I haven't).

Whatever you end up getting, you'll be getting a nice computer. I just felt the need to side with the X24 because I love mine so much.

If battery life is the more important, go with the X30. If you do graphics stuff, go with the X24. If you max out the ram on the X30, you really won't have a problem unless you're doing 3D stuff.

Personally, I like the look of the X24 better, but the X30 feels a bit sturdier.

I have an X30 with slice I'll be getting rid of after the bar for $450 shipped if you're interested (internal everything, new battery, 40gb, 256mb, xp pro, dvd/cdrw).

For battery performance of X30, I do not know, as I only used one for few hours. But battery on X24 is pretty good. The battery is already 2 years old and can still last around 4 hours.

I'm getting around 2 hours on mine (I rarely use it), but I got this X24 refurbished, so I don't know how old the battery is (really, I'm using Linux on this thing so I didn't take the trouble to look at the battery information.)

btw. the keyboard with 104/102 keys is only a problem because I had an english keyboard with german stickers.

why get an X24 and not an X22 then? Might as well save a few bucks and you probably won't see much of a real world difference. I'd use that savings and get more RAM.

The X30 doesn't make sense unless you get a really good deal. I'd rather pay a little more for x31 or less for X2 series.

Not much difference between the PIIIM 800 and 1.13? I'm typing on a X22 now, but it doesn't have a screen assembly

Apparently IBM put the parallel port back in after many people complained about the lack of it. I have a (secondhand) X30 and I like having the parallel port, as there are still many faithful laserprinters around in offices around the world that use such ports. Meaning that if I carry my X30 into a customer's office, there is a chance that I can use a laserjet there. I left an old but indestructible HP L4P with my parents so I'll have a printer available when I visit them. Even my Canon colour inkjet sports both USB and parallel ports. As for looks, the port is on the back, so what?

Just kidding...Actually, Thinkpad X24s are pretty common in eBay nowadays. You can find some really nice deals. Actually, there is a seller with 100% feedback that is located in Australia and has an X24 for sale right now:
